This report is the third edition of a study of the thermal coal market in Russia and the EAEU countries. Currently, the EAEU (Eurasian Economic Union) includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia.

The purpose of the study is to analyze the thermal coal market in the EAEU countries.

The object of the study is thermal coal.

This work is a desk research. Data from the statistical committees of the EAEU countries (including Rosstat, the National Statistical Committee of the Republic of Belarus, the Bureau of National Statistics of the Agency for Strategic Planning and Reforms of the Republic of Kazakhstan) were used as sources of information; UN international databases (UNdata), World Bank, Eurostat; international and European trade data (UN Comtrade, Trade Map); Federal Customs Service of the Russian Federation (until 2022); Unified information system in the field of procurement; railway transport statistics; VLSI databases; foreign specialized companies; annual and quarterly reports of securities issuers; industry and regional press, conference materials, Internet sites of manufacturing enterprises and consumers of the products under study; scientific and technical literature (elibrary, etc.), FIPS patent database; Infomine database, etc.

Chronological scope of the study: 2017-2023; forecast – until 2035

Geography of the study: EAEU countries – detailed market analysis.

Scope of the study: the report consists of 8 parts, contains 119 pages, including 40 tables and 35 figures.

The first chapter of the report provides a classification of coal by grade composition.

The second chapter of the report presents data on coal resources in the EAEU countries.

The third chapter is devoted to coal mining in the EAEU countries. This section provides statistics on thermal coal production in 2017-2023.

This chapter also analyzes the current state of the leading players in the EAEU countries, incl. data on available production capacities, output volumes and range of products, business development plans, directions and volumes of coal shipments.

The fourth chapter provides data on coal development projects in Russia.

The fifth chapter analyzes foreign trade operations with thermal coal in the EAEU in 2017-2023, identifying the dynamics and main directions of trade flows.

The sixth chapter of the report shows the dynamics of prices for thermal coal in foreign trade operations in 2017-2023, as well as in the domestic market of the EAEU countries.

The seventh chapter of the report is devoted to the consumption of thermal coal in the EAEU countries in 2017-2023, and provides data on the structure of consumption by main industries. The main consumer groups have been identified, consumption volumes have been assessed, and the main trends in this market segment have been identified.

The eighth chapter provides a forecast for the development of the thermal coal market in the EAEU countries in the future until 2035. The main policy documents determining the development of the coal industry are considered.

Target audience of the study:

- coal market participants – producers, consumers, traders;

- potential investors.
